Landforms and Spring Break!

Ahhhh, Spring Break! We were off last week and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of my
restful and semi-productive  9 days!  I say semi-productive because I didn't get as far ahead
in planning for school as I wanted.....

(My school bag still sitting where I left it the Friday afternoon that began my break!) I used to
bring this home every.single.day overflowing with things to work on or grade.  Needless to say,
I'm trying to find some balance!

But... I did accomplish my Spring Break bucket list!  I had 3 goals for the week...

Goal 1:  To get the mirror that's been sitting in the corner of my bedroom up against the wall
(for 7 months!) hung up ON the wall! (Check!)

Goal 2:  To get my hair done!  (Check!) My daughter is a hair stylist and when she started cosmetology school several years ago I thought, "Oh, yes! I'll never have roots again!"  Well, nothing could be farther from the truth!  Between her busy work and social life schedule and my crazy schedule it's hard to find the time.  But we did it!)

Goal 3:  To finish my landforms unit!  (Check!) Last year I decided I would put together all of my landforms, oceans, and continents ideas, projects, and resources into a complete unit with lesson plans, assessments etc.  Unfortunately, I decided this after we had done the unit and I didn't take pictures of any of our projects.  When I make units I like to include pictures of not only the completed projects but the process that got us there.  I like to include any anchor charts we've made,  and whatever else we do to give teachers ideas and help clarify the activities.  So I held off until this year and made sure to get pictures of our islands and narrative writing projects.  Ready to go, right?  Not quite.  I couldn't find graphics with the landforms I needed. So-o-o-o I emailed (the sweetest girl ever!) Ashley Hughes, who as luck would have it, was making a set and said she would add what I needed!  Thank you, Ashley!

I've been doing this in my classroom for a few years now and my kiddos LOVE it! They love building the landforms and even my most reluctant writers get so creative with the writing project!
I love it because I can combine writing, science, and ELA standards!  Especially now with Common Core, I'm teaching more cross-curricular than ever with what seems like less time than ever, so I like to be able to hit several standards at once.

Along with a two-week lesson plan and assessments this unit includes a culminating landform building,
map making, and creative narrative writing project.

I spend a lot of time working with my kiddos on being able to verbalize what they know.
"Telling" about their knowledge is the first step to being able to write about it.
I've included a 'Geography Jabber' activity to help support listening and speaking standards
as well as student's ability to later respond in writing.

There are 2 versions of the flap book that are very versatile.
They can be used for researching and writing facts about a particular continent,
ocean, or landform,
defining and illustrating, comparing, or classifying.

Graphic organizers and charts in color for introducing lessons,
as well as black and white student versions.
This unit also includes 3 pages of assessments.

There are 18 landforms charts, including a peninsula. I searched high
and low for chart sets or graphic sets that included a peninsula to no avail!
I asked the wonderful Ashley Hughes
to make this custom set of landforms graphics that included a peninsula
so I could make my own!

I hope you'll check it out!  You can find it in my TPT store {HERE} .

I want to give a great big shout out to Ashley Hughes for making these fabulous graphics! I love the
color and simplicity of her art! You can check out her store {HERE}

Happy Monday!

    1. I guess it's the time of year, but my school bag lately seems to take a little field trip home every night, waits patiently in the car or on the kitchen table, and then back to school the next day!

I'm so glad you like the landforms unit and hope you have a restful break!

    1. Hi Terri! I'd say that's pretty productive! I know how long it takes to make a quilt top! Sewing is such soothing stress relief isn't it?

    1. Good for you, Cindy! This is my husband's crazy busy time of year at work so we're kind of still in work mode during my Spring break. I have to save the hanging out for the summer.... and I cannot wait!

  7. I love your teacher bag! Mine comes home every day as well, and some days I get to it and others I don't. I have given myself permission to stop feeling guilty about it.

    I love the mirror, too!

  8. Thanks, Tea! I'm glad to hear others feel the never ending "pull" of the teacher bag! I get stressed that when I don't get to it I'll have to squeeze that much more into the next day! I'm trying to get better with that!

  11. I loved this unit....but there must be an error on how you post in TPT store. I have been looking for something like this for almost a week on the TPT store and never saw your unit. Today I gave up, and went searching for black and white pictures of landforms and there was your blog and your great unit.

    Thanks a lot

  12. Hi Jacqueline,
I'm glad you found my unit! It is posted correctly and tagged under the proper grades and subject, however the search function on TPT leaves a LOT to be desired! I too, have been frustrated many times searching for what I need. I definitely feel your pain! Here are a couple of tips that work for me when searching on TPT:
    1. Look on the left sidebar. Choose the grade level you need.
    2. Choose the subject you wish to search in as well as a sub category (ex. Science, then Earth Sciences for landforms)
    3. Type your keywords in the search box.
    4. Once the page comes up you'll see a drop down menu at the top of the page. It defaults to 'relevance'. I change that to 'rating' to see the top selling items. Unfortunately you still get unrelated items sometimes but searching this way usually works for me. (My landforms unit comes up on the first page)

I hope this helps and your kiddos enjoy the unit!

  13. OOps! I forgot to mention something else! Do you have a Pinterest account? Many TPT sellers/bloggers pin their products onto Pinterest so you can literally search and "shop" there. Many of the links on the pins will take you to blog posts where the items are featured in use in the classroom with links to where you can purchase them on TPT. You'll also sometimes find things pinned with a direct link to the item on TPT.

Just another thought that may help you!
